ISO 19650 in practice: a plain-language guide to information management

What ISO 19650 asks of appointing parties and delivery teams: information requirements, BEPs, CDE workflows, naming, status codes and handover across India, GCC, UK&I and Europe.

What ISO 19650 is—and is not
ISO 19650 is an international series of standards for managing information over the life of a built asset using BIM. It describes how information should be requested, produced, checked, shared and handed over. It does not prescribe a particular software product, and it does not make a model correct on its own.
Part 1 sets out concepts and principles, Part 2 covers the delivery phase, Part 3 the operational phase, Part 4 information exchange, Part 5 security-minded information management and Part 6 health and safety information. Most project teams start with Parts 1 and 2.
Start with the requirements
The appointing party defines what it needs: Organisational Information Requirements (OIR), Asset Information Requirements (AIR), Project Information Requirements (PIR) and Exchange Information Requirements (EIR). Clear requirements prevent teams modelling detail nobody uses while missing information the operator actually needs.
Delivery teams respond with a BIM Execution Plan (BEP) explaining how they will meet those requirements, plus a Master Information Delivery Plan (MIDP) and Task Information Delivery Plans (TIDPs) that schedule who produces what, and when.
The common data environment
A common data environment (CDE) is the agreed source of information for the project, with defined states: work in progress, shared, published and archived. Platforms such as Autodesk Construction Cloud can host CDE workflows, but the process—review, approval and status change—is what the standard cares about.
Consistent container naming and status and revision codes make information findable and traceable. Agree the naming convention and any national annex conventions at the start, then check them at every exchange.
Applying it across regions
In the UK and Ireland, ISO 19650 is widely referenced in public and private appointments, often with the UK National Annex. In the GCC and Europe, adoption varies by client and authority, and many appointments reference ISO 19650 principles alongside local requirements. In India, adoption is growing on large and international projects.
Whatever the region, follow the appointing party's documented requirements rather than a generic template. The standard is a framework for agreement, not a certificate stamped on a model.
A practical first checklist
Confirm the EIR, agree the BEP, set up CDE states and permissions, fix the naming convention, define review and approval responsibilities and plan the asset information handover. Then test the arrangement on one small exchange before scaling across disciplines.
